Located in West Africa, Niger is situated between the Sahara and the Sahel regions. During the pre-colonial period, the country was divided geographically into kingdoms: the West was ruled by the Songhay Empire, the North by the great Tuareg confederations, the Centre by the Hausa and the far East (around Lake Chad) by the Kanem. The latter was subsequently ruled by the Bornou under Idris Alaoma (1580- 1617).

Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the Songhay Empire broke up into several principalities on both side of the Niger River. Gorouol and Anzourou, created after the fall of the Soni, merged with Kourmey, Téra, Djamare, Karma and Dendi. In contrast, some Hausa states, such as Gobir in the Centre asserted themselves as rising powers. Further west of the Hausa cities, the Ader experienced a boom which enabled them to impose their suzerainty on the Aïr.
